The right leader changes what a business can achieve.
Senior appointments deserve more than a recruitment process.
They require a clear understanding of the business, the market in which it operates and the kind of leader capable of taking it forward.
HCP Automotive conducts confidential executive searches for automotive businesses appointing CEOs, Managing Directors, Group Directors and other senior leaders where the decision carries significant commercial and organisational weight.
We do not begin with a database of available candidates. We begin by understanding what the appointment needs to achieve.
DISCUSS A CONFIDENTIAL APPOINTMENT
When the appointment matters, the search must go further.
The strongest senior candidates are rarely waiting for their next role.
They are usually performing well where they are, trusted by their board and not actively looking for a move. Finding them requires more than advertising a vacancy or searching a database. It requires knowledge of the market, credibility with senior people and the judgement to recognise the right individual when you find them.
That is the discipline of executive search.
We identify and engage leaders who may not otherwise enter the process, assess them against the realities of your business and present a considered shortlist rather than a collection of CVs.
Automotive expertise is part of the search.
HCP Automotive was established by people who had worked in the automotive industry themselves.
That experience remains fundamental to how we work.
We understand the distinction between a successful dealer principal and a group managing director. We understand the demands placed on an OEM leader, the commercial pressures within a dealer group and the qualities required of executives operating across different brands, markets and business models.
Our work spans the United Kingdom, the Middle East and Asia, giving us an understanding of both established automotive markets and businesses operating through periods of significant change.
The result is a search based on more than a candidate’s career history. It is based on an understanding of where that experience can create value.
A search built around the appointment.
01. Understand
We begin with the business rather than the job description.
We take time to understand the organisation, its ownership, commercial position, strategy, culture and immediate priorities. We establish what the new leader must achieve and what has made previous appointments succeed or fail.
From this, we define the leadership profile.
02. Map
We identify the organisations and markets most likely to contain the right experience.
This may include direct competitors, adjacent automotive businesses and, where appropriate, sectors outside automotive where relevant leadership capability can be found.
The purpose is not to produce the longest list.
It is to identify the right market.
03. Engage
Senior executives are approached directly and discreetly.
We introduce the opportunity carefully, protecting confidentiality while giving credible candidates enough substance to understand why the appointment is worth considering.
Our conversations are informed by the market and by the specific circumstances of the business.
04. Assess
A strong career does not automatically make someone the right appointment.
We assess experience, commercial judgement, leadership capability, motivation and the circumstances in which an individual has delivered results.
We also consider the less obvious questions.
Will this person command the confidence of the board?
Can they lead through the challenges ahead?
Will they strengthen the organisation around them?
Is this the right move for them as well as the right appointment for you?
05. Present
We present a concise shortlist of individuals we believe can genuinely meet the brief.
Each candidate is presented with a clear assessment of their experience, suitability and motivation, allowing the client to make an informed decision rather than work through an unnecessary volume of applications.
06. Appoint
Our involvement does not end when the preferred candidate is identified.
We manage the process through interviews, references, offer negotiations and resignation, including the complexities that can arise when a senior executive receives a counter-offer.
Once the appointment is made, we remain available to support the transition into the new role.
The leaders you need may not be looking.
The most capable executive in a market is often the least visible.
They may already be succeeding in another organisation. They may have no reason to register with a recruitment company. They may only consider a move if the opportunity, business and timing are right.
That is why discreet engagement is such an important part of our work.
Our role is not simply to find people who want the job.
It is to identify people who could make a significant difference to the business and establish whether the opportunity is right for them.
Leadership requirements are changing.
Automotive leadership is no longer defined solely by traditional sector experience.
Electrification, software, technology, changing retail models, new market entrants and evolving customer expectations are changing the businesses our clients operate.
The next generation of automotive leaders therefore needs to understand where the industry has come from while being capable of leading it somewhere different.
Sometimes that person will come from directly within the sector.
Sometimes the strongest candidate will bring experience from elsewhere.
Our responsibility is to know the difference.
A senior appointment is a business decision.
The cost of an unsuitable executive extends well beyond the recruitment fee.
It can affect performance, morale, succession, customer relationships and the confidence of the people responsible for the business.
The right appointment can do the opposite.
It can give an organisation direction, strengthen the leadership team and provide the capability required for the next stage of its development.
That is why we approach executive search with discretion, judgement and a thorough understanding of the market.

They took the time to understand our business, challenged our thinking, and found the right leader for where we are going. I found Ash to be highly knowledgeable, clearly someone who knows the industry inside out..
